In Appreciation of Enthusiastic Contrarians

Beth Meixner, my dear friend and client and founder of Moxxie Network and Moxxie Mentoring Foundation, refers to me as her "enthusiastic contrarian". And I take this as a compliment! I view my role as an attorney to identify risks, to point out information that might have not been considered, and, generally, in Beth's words, "to solve problems before they happen." I am fortunate that she sees the benefit of doing so, because the saved costs and aggravation of avoiding pitfalls and minefields are not always obvious.

Although they do not use Beth's term, Cass Sunstein and Reid Hastie, in their recent book, Wiser; Getting Beyong Groupthink to Make Groups Smarter (recently discussed by the Moxxie Network Business Book Club) pay tribute to what they term "anxious people":
"Anxious people . . . are indispensable in business and government, because they cut through, and overcome, the risk of groupthink. They say what they think. Even better, they say what they fear. So, don't shoot the messenger! Embrace an enthusiastic contrarian today!
